(Los Angeles And Orange County) Epoxy Inspection - Shearwall Nailing Inspection - Shotcrete Inspection - Masonry Inspection and more!
The Special Inspector's job for concrete is typically a continuous inspection, meaning they must be present whenever critical work is being performed. Their responsibilities include:
Reinforcement (Rebar) Inspection:
Verifying the type, size, quantity, and placement of reinforcing steel (rebar) against the approved plans.
Confirming the correct use of spacers and supports (chairs, bolsters) to maintain proper concrete cover and rebar position.
Inspecting all splices and laps to ensure they meet code requirements.
Concrete Placement Observation:
Monitoring the actual pouring of the concrete to ensure proper placement techniques are used, such as controlling the rate of pour and minimizing segregation.
Verifying that the concrete is properly vibrated to eliminate voids and achieve consolidation.
Material Verification and Testing:
Confirming the correct mix design (compressive strength, slump, air content) is delivered to the site.
Performing on-site slump and air content tests and determining the temperature of the concrete.
Fabricating concrete test cylinders (samples) that will be laboratory-tested at 7 and 28 days (or as specified) to confirm the concrete meets the specified compressive strengthÂ
Formwork Inspection:
Checking the formwork (molds) for proper alignment, bracing, and stability before concrete is placed.
Post-Placement Oversight:
Verifying that the specified curing procedures (e.g., proper moisture and temperature control) are maintained to allow the concrete to achieve its full strength.
A Special Inspector for concrete typically holds an ICC Reinforced Concrete Special Inspector certification and may also require a specific certification from the American Concrete Institute (ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I) to perform the required material testing and sample fabrication.
